day of rest

I try to be strict with myself and have one whole day off each week - usually Sunday. So yesterday ... blackberrying, snuggling up by the fire, Sunday papers and making a crumble with my daughter (with the previously harvested blackberries) to finish off our traditional Sunday roast (this week a treat - roast beef). Oh, and we've discovered the absolute best way guarantee stunning rare roast beef - up to 1kg, blast it on the bbq, 14mins one side, 13mins the other, then wrap in lots of foil and leave to rest for a good 40mins. It never fails.

i'm finding it difficult to concentrate ...

My daughter has finally persuaded me to buy her 1st jar of Nutella (she is 7) and I must say, it is rather moreish. When researching my new acquisition I spotted this fabulous waistband splitting recipe on the Ambitious Kitchen blog for

Nutella-Stuffed Brown Butter + Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies {my favorite cookie ever}

Wow. Test run this weekend.

my greatest asset

My beautiful little girl Georgia, aged 7, has turned into my personal shopper. Even as a baby, she loved shopping for clothes with me, and her finger is now firmly on the fashion pulse. She sees through flighty trends and frippery and identifies classic, investment buys with the eye of a seasoned stylist. She is absolutely my greatest shopping asset (as well as life asset).
Here she is in a Gucci men's winter hat - I think looking quite gorgeous.

the power of perfume ...

I am absolutely thrilled. After being fixed on Coco by Chanel for 2 decades, I have been on the hunt for a contemporary frangrance to ring the changes. I had a very pleasurable search, discovering some superb perfumes from artisan fragrance houses, finally chancing upon Signature but Ruth Mastenbroek. It ticks all my boxes ...  fresh citrus top notes, flowers and woods in the heart, and sensual, beguiling base notes. Love it love it love it. As a special treat, I also ordered the heavenly body lotion and am now swanning around in heavenly aromas throughout the day. The best compliment came from my 7 year old daughter - 'yummy Mummy'.

Cool perfume

Spotted on the Normann Copenhagen blog ... a rather delicious sounding new perfume from Maison Martin Margiela called Funfair Evening. Inspired by sugar candy, natural vanilla pods and a day in an amusement park.

I'm not a vegetarian but ...

As time goes by, my palate seems to be becoming more and more vegetarian by desire rather than design. My daughter gets excellent 3 course school lunches, often involving meat (although she chooses vegetarian options sometimes too) so I figure that it's OK to eat largely vegetarian food for our evening meal. (This changes when my husband is at home, when I eat later with him and he is still a pretty determined carnivore, although he will put up with fresh pesto 'where's the bacon' pasta on occasion.)
Last night, I felt like something warming and spicey, so I fed Georgia earlier and made myself the easiest, most delicious couscous steeped in Belazu Rose Harissa (I am addicted to this stuff) and vegetable stock, cooled and served with chopped cucumber, tomatoes, olives and roasted butternut squash. Yum.
This weekend, I spotted some wonderful vegetarian recipes in the Telegraph Magazine from the gorgeous looking Potager Glasshouse Cafe in Cornwall. I am getting stacks of courgettes in my veggie box at the moment, so the first I shall be trying is this delicious looking soup ...

Cumin, lemon and courgette soup with lemon oil

Serves 4
Ingredients
2 tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp caraway
½ tsp fenugreek
7 tbsp olive oil
2 onions, finely chopped
2 stalks of celery, finely chopped
4 courgettes, diced
200g peas (fresh or frozen)
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
the grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
1 small bunch of parsley, chopped
600ml vegetable stock
a little hone

In a dry pan toast the cumin, caraway and fenugreek seeds, then grind them in a coffee grinder or a pestle and mortar. Heat four tablespoons of the oil in a medium-size pan, add the onions, celery and the ground spices, and fry over a low heat until soft. Add the courgettes, peas, garlic and some black pepper, cook for a further five minutes, stir in half of the lemon zest and juice, half of the parsley and all the stock. Simmer for 15 minutes or until cooked, add the rest of the parsley, blend the soup and season to taste.
Lemon oil Mix the rest of the lemon zest and juice with a little honey add a little salt and stir in the rest of the olive oil. Swirl on to the soup.

Super cool and squidgey

Their classic simplicity allows them to fit into pretty much any design scheme - classic, retro, contemporary. It comes in 5 gorgeous colours too - purple, grey, black, beige and turquoise. I have my eye on a purple one ...

Fathers Day

Memories, memories, memories. Georgia is now 6, nearly 7. Not so long ago, it seems, she was this little dot sitting on her Father's shoulders. For Father's Day this year, she made him a paper model of a house, a gorgeous card with a picture of a rabbit (a strong hint for Daddy about her need for a lop-earred bunny) and organised him a lucky dip - involving buried bottles of Sloe Gin, Port, a heart shaped cheddar cheese and some rather delicious Stilton - all from a lovely new website we've found called British Fine Foods. And the sun even shone. Perfect.

for the love of walking ...

Our very beautiful Labrador Tarka encourages me outside for a walk every day. When I say encourage, she makes herself as gently apparent as she can, always erring on the side of politeness, until the job is done.
I love walking with her. But I have recently decided to use my daily walks as a way of keeping properly fit. Further inspiration in the Telegraph today ... a great little booklet by fitness expert Joanna Hall called The Walking Diet. It seems as though my modern-day walking style leaves a lot to be desired and some small changes should reap big rewards for posture, fitness and calories used. Next stop the Cotswold Outdoor Company, where my feet received more attention than they have done in years. Measured, prodded, studied ... I left with a much better understanding of my own two feet, the mechanics of walking and running, and orders for two pairs of 'approach' shoes. I can't wait for them to arrive.
In the meantime, I'm off for a walk now with Tarka in my wellies. It's drizzling slightly but we don't mind. Just me, my dog and Mother Nature. Brilliant.

making the most of a small space

Isn't this fab? This rather gorgeous hallway is featured on http://emmas.blogg.se/
We live in the country now, but I spent my 20s in smaller flats in London, forever searching for ways of maximising the space that I owned. Clever designs like this one do just that, with a cool palette of neutrals, shiny floors and plenty of light.
Think out of the box and you will find lots of potential. Our foldaway Stockholm Wallchair is a great way of adding interest and utility to hallway or a dining are that is tight on space.
Or another space-saving hanging storage solution ... what about this wonderful ladder made from beautifully weathered, reclaimed wood collected from old Colonial and Indian houses. Hand painted in gentle, chalky paints it will complement any interior design scheme beautifully. It works particularly well in the bathroom for hanging towels.

my tea journey ...

Being a confirmed coffee drinker for many years (in fact, some would say coffee snob) I re-discovered the delights of tea at Chaikhana, a genuine teahouse in the heart of Stockholm's old town. I came home from my trip with two pouches of glorious, delicate leaves and have fallen in love with tea all over again.
I recently came across Postcard Teas in London and am learning all sorts of things from their wonderful website. Here's what Lucia van der Post of the Times says about the shop:
"Postcard Teas boasts an amazing list of teas, some of which you may never have heard of and some you know well. The website tells you more about tea than you ever knew and best of all sends you on an exploratory tour of its tea estates".
And so my tea journey re-commences ...

how many handbags does a girl need?

My answer to this is in the large cupboard in my daughter's room. Less than 100 but definitely more than 10.
The cupboard is stuffed full of handbag confectionery - from the heavy weights (Prada, Gucci, Mulberry) to the bantam weights (but just as much loved ... Gap, Boden, Whistles).
But still I needed another one. So last week I took my 6 year old 'stylish' to my new discovery Cocinelle, a wonderful Italian brand that was on my radar but not in my cupboard.
As I pfaffed and fussed around the beautiful bags on offer, trying this one and that one, my little girl sauntered up to a shelf and picked one that I missed - which happened to be their classic, bestselling handbag. The shop assistants were so impressed with her sense of style! And I loved it at first sight. Perhaps I have now found the perfect handbag? It is not too big, not too small; made of beautiful chestnut leather in just the right shade for summer and winter; it is not heavy; it has the essential studs on the bottom to protect the base; the handles are long enough to wear over the shoulder, yet short enough to carry on the arm; lovely metal hardware (but not too much); understated, chic, simple and wonderful.

the circus is coming to town

'Bearded Lady' Print £35

We are always so excited to get the dates for the annual Giffords Circus visit each summer. This magical miniature 'village green' circus in a fluttering white tent is packed with amazing acrobats, some beautiful horses, and a goose called Brian. This year, the show is called 'the 2012 Saturday Book'.
Giffords tours rural South West England and moves each week - check venues and dates here.
